”Microdermabrasion is a safe and common procedure. It has been a popular treatment since 1991.
What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive system of intense exfoliation and resurfacing that rejuvenates the skin by using ultra-fine crystals or a diamond head.
This increases the blood supply that provides nutrients necessary for skin regeneration, repair, and increased cellular turnover. In return, improving the skins’ elasticity and texture, as well as balancing the pigment.
How does the treatment work?
After the skin is cleansed to remove excess oil and dirt, Lymphatic drainage is then performed. The Clairderm machine has this unique vacuum component or ‘suction’ modality that aids superficial circulation and lymphatic drainage thus bringing nourishment to the cells and aiding movement of toxins into the interstitial fluid which is then removed by the body.
Depending on the skin type, varying degrees of erythema (pink or redness) is visible during this suction process that is a great indication to the technician to set the crystals setting for the individual’s skin type, especially if the skin type is sensitive.
After the lymphatic drainage, the even crystal dispersion is performed on the face, neck and décolletage. This breaks up the stratum corneum of old, dead cells. When completed the vacuum component sucks up the crystals along with the dead skin debris.
The appropriate moisturisers, masks and serums are then applied which the skin is able to readily absorb. Applied sun block finishes off the treatment as the new surface skin must be protected, it is now more photosensitive.
How long does a Microdermabrasion treatment last?
A Microdermabrasion facial treatment lasts approximately 50 minutes. Additional time is required for added areas.
What are the results?
It has proven to be effective in the treatment of the following conditions:
Fine lines
Enlarged or clogged pores
Mild acne/complexion issues
Sun damage
Uneven skin tone
Oily skin
Dry/Patchy skin
Acne scarring
Black/white heads
Dull lifeless skin
In addition, most clients experience dramatic improvements in the color, tone, and texture of treated areas. In general, microdermabrasion results in thicker, healthier, more youthful looking skin. Over the course of a full set of treatments, the body will produce new layers of skin containing higher levels of elastin and collagen. This, in turn, improves the complexion and gives the skin a more radiant, vibrant glow.
How soon will results appear?
Microdermabrasion results are usually immediate and noticeable. Results improve with multiple treatments and vary depending on your individual skin quality.
How many treatments are required?
Depending on the skin type, skin concern and the severity of the skin concern, treatment regime and setting will be discussed and decided upon at the first treatment. Initially a series of treatments either fortnightly or monthly apart are recommended for visible skin results and maintenance thereafter monthly or twice monthly. Acne scars and or discolorations may require more treatments. Monthly maintenance treatments or every 2 or 3 months may be necessary to maintain results.
How long do the results last?
Usually a week to two weeks. Lasting effects are dependent on proper skin care. Attention to good, regular moisturisers in your post treatment care will make the difference and sun block of course. Additional treatments will renew a youthful skin appearance.
Can I go back to work after a microdermabrasion treatment?
YES! A few clients do notice their skin feeling tight immediately after the treatment as if the skin has been exposed to the sun or wind. You might experience a slight dryness of the skin depending upon your skin type. An effective moisturiser is applied after the treatment to prevent this drying of the skin. The skin might appear slightly red for the remainder of the day. Additionally, the client is asked to refrain from using makeup on the day of the treatment to give the skin chance to breathe and regenerate itself. However, a little concealer won’t hurt and eye makeup and lipstick are fine.
Will there be any downtime?
One of the advantages of Microdermabrasion is that it has no downtime except as mentioned some skins can take two hours for redness to fade out and forty eight hours for a tightness or dryness to disappear but good post treatment care reduces this.
Why Microdermabrasion is called the "lunchtime face lift"?
Because microdermabrasion is non-evasive and looks fabulous after the treatment or slightly flushed for just a few hours the nickname "lunchtime face lift" has been coined by clients because of its quick recovery time. Microdermabrasion is an excellent option for people who cannot take time off from work or feel insecure for the more evasive deeper chemical peels or laser therapy treatments that do require downtime.
Who are candidates for Microdermabrasion?
The ideal candidates for microdermabrasion are healthy adults who have relatively minor skin conditions or imperfections and realistic expectations about what microdermabrasion can and cannot do. Microdermabrasion works well for damaged skin, whether affected by acne, sun damage or aging; and skin of any type or colour.

How does the treatment feel?
The feeling is often compared to a cats’ tongue licking your face. Tightness and warmth are common effects and quickly fade.
