LED therapy connects to “wellbeing” as much as it does to anti-ageing. The U.S. Navy SEALs began using it in the 1990s to help heal wounds quickly and to help regenerate damaged muscle tissues. Over the last few years, pro-athletes and world class trainers have incorporated red light therapy into their daily workout and recovery routines. The beauty and skin health industry has an established history of this very popular light therapy. LED treatment is mainly noted for boosting collagen and elastin all of which can smooth out your skin, reduce inflammation and the appearance of sun damage. Due to the fact that LED doesn’t contain ultraviolet rays, this is considered safe and non-invasive with no downtime. How does it work?
LED (Light emitting diodes) work by transmitting concentrated wavelengths of light (not heat) into your skin which is then absorbed by skin cells. It adds oomph to your skins regular turnover. There are different frequencies or wavelengths. Gem Skin uses Red, Infrared, Green and Blue light frequencies. These frequencies are readily absorbed into the skin. The difference between Red and Infrared - the two holy grails of anti-ageing. Red (640 nm) Targets dermal layers providing excellent results in collagen and elastin synthesis. In theory, more collagen means that your skin will look smoother and fuller, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Red LED light also helps to reduce inflammation of sebaceous glands, firms, and gives you a healthier glow. Infrared (830nm) penetrates deeper in the dermis – reaching the subcutaneous layer of the skin and muscle to enable deep tissue repair and cellular regeneration. Reduces scar reduction and sun damage. Green (527 nm) Assists skin tone correction, aids detoxification to reduce redness and irritation for a balanced, calm complexion. Helps calm Rosacea and Eczema. Lessens redness following treatments and procedures. Blue (470 nm) targets the sebaceous (oil) glands that if overactive can lead to acne. This light is known to make them less active and also kills acne-causing bacteria or P acnes which can cause inflammation. In turn, you see fewer acne breakouts. Good for Psoriasis and Dermatitis. Often times, blue LED light is used in conjunction with red LED to decrease scarring and promote anti-inflammatory effects. Procedure for LED light therapy Gem Skin incorporates LED within the skin regeneration facial. It’s usually for about 10-15 minutes that you’ll find is very relaxing. (It is known for balancing your circadian rhythm so a tired body clock gets a re-boot.) Most salons offer it as a separate treatment on a regular basis. Technically it can be used on any part of the body to heal a scar for example. (Also see my blog on my clients Nose Skin Cancer surgery to recovery where the doctor recommended regular LED therapy.) What skin conditions is it useful for? Acne, general skin regeneration, pigmentation, inflammation, decrease scarring, detoxification, fine lines, brightens skin, healing, eczema and more. If you are not sure about LED, talk to your dermatologist about your skincare concerns and whether LED light therapy is a good option for you.
